Vegetables and Herbs

We use approximately 1 acre for growing vegetables and herbs.

This area consists of fields (subdivided into beds), a polytunnel, soft fruit cage as well as a cobnut tree ride. Native hedging encloses each of the fields. The cobnut tree ride is lined with filbert and cobnut trees.

We produce high quality organically certified produce employing strategies and programmes that ensure sound ecological and sustainable management of vegetable and herb fields.

All work in the vegetable and herb fields is carried out according to sustainable principles that will maintain the fertility of the vegetable and herb fields and increase the diversity of varieties and species. The organic approach to farming recognises that the whole environment is much more than the sum of its individual parts, and that all living things are interrelated and interdependent. This means treating the soil and growing environment as a resource to be cherished for future generations, rather than mined for short-term gain.

The site employs organic (Soil Association) approved sustainable management that will ensure the maintenance of good soil structure and fertility. Providing plants with a balanced food supply is essential, feeding the soil rather than the plant is the best way to achieve this. Hedges are especially important part of providing semi-natural habitat and wildlife corridors. The sensitive management and upkeep of the hedges is fundamental to the management of the vegetable and herb fields.
