Orchard and Meadow
We have planted the main fruit orchard of 40 fruit trees on semi-standard and dwarfing stock. The orchard has been undersown with a traditional meadow/orchard mix of grasses and wildflowers. A native hedge has been planted around the orchard. The hedging is a mix of hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel and dogwood.
Our aim is to manage the orchard in accordance to organic (Soil
Association) cultivation techniques and increase the diversity of
varieties and species. The trees are currently in their establishment
phase and are being protected from animals and kept weed free. All
trees have been planted at a density consistent with grazing and
haymaking.
The main access track which dissects the orchard and wildflower meadow
is lined, on both sides, by medler, crab apple and wild cherry trees.
The wildflower meadow has been sown with a traditional meadow mix of
grasses and wildflowers. A beech hedge has been planted along the
western boundary of this area. Along the southern boundary the existing
hedge has been gapped up and replanted with native hedging plants.
Our aim is to conserve and enhance the quality of the meadowland
through rotated grazing of organically maintained livestock and
haymaking.
The meadow is managed as a traditional Lammas meadow. The cut hay will
eventually be used for livestock. Livestock will be allowed to
selectively graze all appropriate areas. We ensure at least 10% meadow
is left uncut to ensure sufficient over wintering cover for
invertebrates.
