Establishing the Smallholding
We have begun the lifelong task of establishing and managing a mixed organic smallholding.
We are attempting to create a way of living that is cyclical and self-reliant and one that brings something positive to our village.
We have been working to re-establish the type of smallholding that
used to be a part of life in every village but that has sadly all but
disappeared in South Cambridgeshire. We are investing in the land,
working with the natural world and attempting to protect our social and
environmental heritage. New habitats have given local flora and fauna a
safe haven from the surrounding prairie agriculture and estate housing.
For the purposes of the web site the holding has been divided into four main areas.
The aims of the holdings overall management plan are:
- To maintain and enhance the habitats and species diversity.
- To maintain and enhance the landscape quality.
- To facilitate the provision of livelihoods and an increase in productivity, without prejudice to the above aims.
- To illustrate, by way of creating a sustainable, living smallholding, the importance of and potential for 1) reversing the trends of intensive farming and 2) innovative development projects in rural villages.
